Disaster Preparedness & Early Warning Systems

Disaster Preparedness & Early Warning Systems

SEFNep aims to strengthen disaster preparedness in Nepal by connecting research with practical action. Through collaboration with local governments, communities, and partner organisations, this initiative seeks to improve understanding of disaster risks, strengthen early warning systems, and support coordinated action before hazards become emergencies.

A central priority is ensuring that early warnings reach people at risk and enable timely, informed decisions. Our focus includes identifying gaps in warning communication, supporting accessible and locally relevant messages, and linking alerts to clear preparedness and response procedures. Particular attention is given to people and communities who face barriers to receiving, understanding, or acting on warnings.

The initiative seeks to support local risk assessments, community preparedness plans, training, and simulation exercises. By bringing together local knowledge and scientific evidence, SEFNep aims to help communities and institutions clarify responsibilities, identify safe actions, and strengthen coordination to protect lives, livelihoods, and essential services.

Through these efforts, we seek to embed disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation into local planning, building lasting capacity to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to disasters.
